Seat Inca Engine Issues

I'm having a problem with my 2001 Seat Inca, gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, the engine is running rough, there's an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust smell. Could a defective lambda sensor be the cause? I haven't looked at the DEF fluid system yet, as I'm not sure if it's related.

I own a Seat Inca as well, and I encountered a similar issue with the engine light and rough running. Have you inspected the catalytic converter for any damage or blockages? A malfunctioning catalytic converter can trigger the engine light and cause poor engine performance.

The catalytic converter appears to be in acceptable condition upon visual examination. Could a faulty NOx sensor potentially mimic these symptoms, or is a defective lambda sensor the more probable culprit given the exhaust leak and strong smell?

Considering the exhaust leak and smell, a defective lambda sensor is indeed a strong possibility. While NOx sensors can contribute to similar symptoms, the leak points towards a lambda sensor issue. I recommend taking it to a workshop for a diagnostic check to confirm the fault.

I appreciate your insight. The workshop confirmed a defective lambda sensor as the primary cause. After replacement, the engine light is now off, the rough running is resolved, and the exhaust leak has been fixed. The total expenditure amounted to 375€.
