Thanks for the quick response. I did check the wiring harness visually, but didn't do a continuity test. Is that something I can do with a standard multimeter, or do I need specific tools? Also, is there a specific brake sensor I should be looking for?

A standard multimeter will suffice for a continuity test; check for shorts to ground as well. The brake sensor I referred to is the one integrated into the caliper motor assembly; it provides feedback to the ECU regarding the parking brake position. If the wiring checks out, and the sensor reading is erratic or absent, the motor assembly is likely the cause. A workshop with VCDS or ODIS can confirm this and perform the necessary coding after replacing the caliper. Your estimated repair cost of 505€ seems reasonable, inclusive of parts and labour.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions and explaining the likely cause in detail. It's booked in at the workshop. They've quoted 505€, which seems in line with what you suggested. I'll post again once the repair is complete.

The symptoms you describe are quite common with electronic parking brake systems, particularly on VAG vehicles. A fault code scan is essential, pinpointing which caliper is throwing the error. Before condemning the motor, I would check the wiring harness and connections to the caliper. Corrosion or damage there can mimic a faulty motor. Have you checked the brake sensor?
