CAN bus? Data link? I'm not sure what to check exactly. Could you explain that a bit more simply?

Certainly. If the CAN bus, the car's internal communication network, has a fault in its data link, it can disrupt communication between the control units. This might trigger the check engine light and cause the engine to overheat. However, I recommend a workshop visit for a proper car diagnostics. They can pinpoint the exact source of the error. In my case, the workshop confirmed the control unit error, and the mechanics fixed it quickly.

Thanks for the information. Turns out it was a defective plug connection as suspected. 95€ later and it's fixed.

I have a Tarraco myself and experienced something similar. Engine overheating, check engine light, and coolant loss. It turned out to be related to a control unit issue. Did you check the CAN bus system for any diagnostic trouble codes? A faulty data link could cause communication errors between the control units, leading to the symptoms you described.
