Seat Toledo check engine light and exhaust smell

I'm a bit stressed out about my 2003 Seat Toledo. The check engine light keeps coming on, and car diagnostics shows a problem with the NOx catalyst. I've also noticed a weird exhaust smell lately. It has a gasoline engine and about 72684 km on the clock. Could it be just old age or something more serious? The error memory says something about nitrogen oxides. Could that explain the exhaust leaking as well?

Sounds familiar. I've got a Seat Toledo too, though a bit newer. I had a similar issue with the check engine light and error codes pointing to the emissions system. Have you checked for any obvious exhaust leaks? Sometimes it's just a cracked pipe or a loose connection. What were the exact error codes?

Yeah, NOx catalyst aging is often triggered by exhaust leaks throwing off the sensor readings. A small leak can be hard to spot. The leak messes with the catalytic converter efficiency. Given the error code and exhaust leak, I'd bet on that being the issue. The best thing would be to get it professionally inspected. I hope it goes well!

Thanks! I haven't checked for leaks myself, to be honest. Where should I be looking exactly? And how can I tell if it's a small leak? The error code I read with car diagnostics was related to NOx catalyst aging. Could that really be caused by a simple exhaust leak?

I wanted to let you know that you were right. I took it to a mechanic, and they found a leak in the exhaust system, right before the NOx catalyst. They replaced it, and the check engine light is gone. Cost me 265€, but at least it's sorted. Thanks for your help.
