Good point about the exhaust. I haven't specifically checked for unusual smoke, but the smell of fuel has been more noticeable recently. Could a simple fuel injector cleaner help, or is it possibly something more serious?

Okay, so if you're smelling more fuel, it might be beyond just a dirty injector. While a cleaner could help in mild cases, the stalling and poor starting suggest a more significant problem. You're probably looking at a proper diagnostic and repair, possibly needing to replace the injector. The garage is the best bet for those issues.

I took it to a trusted workshop and they confirmed a defective injection nozzle. Repair, including parts and labor, came to 515€. Vehicle performance is back to normal, emissions are within spec, and the engine runs smoothly again.

That sounds like it could be the issue. Have you noticed any unusual smoke from the exhaust or any changes in the engine's sound, especially when accelerating? Maybe also check if you smell fuel more strongly than usual, it could be a sign of leaking.
