Seat Toledo Diesel Engine Starting Trouble

I have a 2003 Seat Toledo with a diesel engine and about 103374 km on it. Recently, I've had trouble starting it. The engine light is on, and it won't start. I suspect it might be fuel injection, but I'm not sure. I've done some basic engine checks, but nothing obvious. Has anyone experienced similar engine stalling issues or can point me in the right direction before I take it to a professional?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Seat Toledo with a diesel engine was experiencing starting trouble, with the engine light on and suspected fuel injection issues. A suggestion was made to check the battery cable connections for corrosion, as loose or corroded connections can prevent the engine from starting. Upon inspection and cleaning of the battery terminals, the problem was resolved, confirming the initial suspicion about the battery connections.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I'm sorry to hear about the issues. I had a similar problem with my Seat Toledo. The engine light came on, and the engine stalled sometimes. Eventually, it wouldn't start. Did you check the battery cable connections? Mine were loose and corroded, and that stopped the engine from starting. Check and clean them well. It might solve the problem. Let me know if it helps.

Thanks for the quick response. When you say visibly corroded, or is there a way to test them? Also, did your engine light come on before it refused to start?

In my case, it was visibly corroded. There was white powdery residue on the terminals and the cable clamps. You can try cleaning them with a wire brush and some battery terminal cleaner. The engine light illuminated sometimes for a few weeks before the car completely refused to start. If cleaning the terminals doesn't work, take it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis. They can check the fuel injection system and other potential causes.

Just to let you know, you were right. The garage confirmed the battery cable connections were the issue. They cleaned them, and the car started immediately. It was 155€, but at least it's resolved. Thanks again for the assistance.
