I am writing to inquire about a potential issue with my 2000 Seat Toledo, which has a diesel engine. A warning light has appeared in the speedometer, and the car is emitting smoke when accelerating. Furthermore, it appears that regeneration of the DPF is no longer possible. Diagnostics point towards a malfunctioning exhaust back pressure sensor. Could this be the root cause?

I experienced something similar with my Toledo. Same symptoms: warning light and smoke during acceleration. A defective pressure sensor is the most probable cause given the error codes. Have you checked the wiring and the connections to the sensor? Sometimes a loose connection can trigger a false reading and the same warning. Also, what diagnostic tool did you use to read the error codes?

Thank you for your reply. I have not checked the wiring myself, as I am not very experienced with car maintenance. The error code was read at a local garage, I am not sure about the diagnostic tool used. If the wiring appears to be in order, is it safe to assume the pressure sensor is the problem?

Given the symptoms and the diagnostic report, it is highly likely the pressure sensor is faulty. I'd advise against driving it extensively with this issue, as it could potentially damage the DPF further. While checking the wiring is a good first step, it might be best to take it to a reputable workshop for a professional diagnosis and replacement of the sensor. They will be able to confirm the issue and ensure the new sensor is properly calibrated. It should resolve the issue with emission control.

The workshop confirmed the exhaust back pressure sensor was faulty. After replacement, the warning light went off. The car runs smoother, and the smoke issue disappeared. The final bill was 245€.
