Seeking Advice for Possible Crankshaft Sensor Failure in 2022 Kia Niro

Hey fellow car experts, I'm going through a bit of a weird phase with my 2022 Kia Niro with a Gasoline engine. Lately, it's giving me some trouble - check engine light keeps popping on, engine's been shutting off on its own, it takes longer than usual to start in the cold, there's a noticeable drop in power, unsteady engine behavior, and sometimes it won't start at all. I'm suspecting a crankshaft sensor failure here but I'd appreciate any insights based on your experiences. Has anyone encountered these issues before and got them addressed at a workshop? If yes, what were your experiences like and how did the workshop handle it? Looking forward to your tips and advice. Thanks in advance!

Hey there. I've got a 2019 Kia Sportage and I had some similar issues. I'm not an expert by any means, but I do have some experience working on cars. The check engine light was the first clue for me too. I had exactly the same symptoms, tried to ignore it for a while before my Kia wouldn't start at all one morning. Took it down to my local workshop and they ran some diagnostics. Turns out the Crankshaft sensor wiring harness/connector was knackard. They had it fixed in a day and it cost me 170€, which seemed reasonable for the peace of mind. Haven't had a problem with it since. I'm wondering if yours is the exact same issue. What's your mileage? And can you tell me if you've had any recent maintenance or repairs? It might help me give you a bit more accurate info.

Hey, thanks for your reply! My Kia's mileage is at 89277 KM currently, the last service was about a couple thousand kilometers back. Didn't have any major repairs recently, just the usual stuff like oil change and such. It's interesting that you had a similar issue with your Sportage, could very well be the same problem with my Niro. I'll definitely look into the Crankshaft sensor wiring harness, it's worth a shot! Thanks for your advice, really appreciate it.

Hey there, no worries at all. Mechanics can be a bit of a mystery sometimes. Your Kia Niro's mileage seems pretty spot-on for something like this to come up. I think the usual rule of thumb is that the crankshaft sensor or its associated wiring can start acting up anywhere between 75,000 to 100,000 KM. With your last service being a while ago, this seems more and more plausible. I definitely suggest getting it checked out by your local mechanic the soonest though. They can perform a simple diagnostic using an OBD2 Scanner to confirm if it is indeed the Crankshaft Position Sensor that's causing your woes. If it is, the repair itself is quite straightforward and shouldn't take too long or cost you an arm and a leg. Plus, a faulty sensor can really mess with your fuel economy and overall engine performance. Better nip it in the bud. Good luck, and hit me up if you need more help or advice!

Thanks a ton for your sound advice! By all accounts, it looks like a crankshaft sensor issue from what you've just described. I should probably stop procrastinating and head to the workshop before my Kia decides to give up on me on a busy freeway! I'll definitely mention your tip about OBD2 Scanner to the mechanic. I wish I was a bit more car-savvy, but I suppose, with help from like you, we all learn with time. Really appreciate your help on this one, and I'll be sure to reach out with any further questions. Good day!
