Seeking Advice on 2002 Kia Sorento's Weak Battery and Flickering Lights Issues

Hey all, I've got a 2002 Kia Sorento with a gasoline engine that's been acting up recently. The battery seems weak when starting up and the lights keep dimming and flickering. I think it might be a severely discharged vehicle battery, but I'd like some second opinions. Has anyone had a similar issue and visited a workshop to get this sorted? What was your experience and how did they fix it? Any tips would really be appreciated!

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Kia Sorento is experiencing issues with a weak battery and flickering lights. The suspected cause is a severely discharged battery, but a faulty battery sensor is also considered a possibility. A similar issue was resolved by replacing a faulty battery sensor, suggesting a workshop visit for a full check and potential sensor replacement. Additionally, testing the battery itself is recommended to rule out other issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2000 Kia Sportage a while back. I'd call myself a bit of a newbie in the car world, but I do pick up a few things every now and then! Turned out my battery sensor was faulty. It cost me about 315 bucks to get it fixed at the workshop. They ran a full check, replaced the sensor, and voila, it was all good again. Just out of curiosity, what's the state and mileage of your Sorento? That might give us a bit more to go on in case you're dealing with a similar problem. Cheers!

Hey, thanks for the insight! You're quite savvy for a 'newbie', your experience really helps. My Sorento's overall condition is pretty good, it's been well maintained. Sitting on a pretty low mileage actually, only about 14382 KM, can't complain about that. Had it last serviced a while ago though. Guess I may have to pop into a workshop and get that battery sensor checked out. Thanks a ton!

No problem at all! We're all learning as we go. With just 14382 KM on the clock, your Sorento is indeed in a pretty solid state. In fact, it's quite surprising to hear about electrical issues on a car with such low mileage, your last service might've missed something. But hey, as long as it's nothing major, a visit to the workshop is never a bad idea. Also, when you visit, you might consider getting the battery itself tested too, just to rule out any other possibilities. You never know, it could just be a case of your battery being nearing its end life or has similar issues. Always better safe than sorry in this case. Good luck, and do let us know what you find out! Always great to learn from each other's experiences. Drive safe!

You bet! Thanks for pointing that out. I definitely should’ve kept up with my car services more regularly. It does make sense to get the battery checked too, think I'll add that to my list. Who knows, maybe it is just the age of the battery causing all the commotion. Reading this made me feel more prepared to face the workshop. I'll be sure to update you on what happens! Drive safe too!
