Seeking Advice on 2003 Volvo XC90 Diesel Start Failures and Check Engine Indicators

Hey fellow car enthusiasts, I've got a bit of a head-scratcher here with my 2003 Volvo XC90 Diesel. So, my check engine light is on, engine turns off by itself and worse, she won't even start. Ran a diagnostics and got a fault stored message logged in. My hunch is that there might be a coding issue but I'm open to other theories. Anyone here encountered something similar and had it resolved at a service shop? I’d appreciate any tips or experiences you can share. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The 2003 Volvo XC90 Diesel is experiencing start failures and a persistent check engine light. The initial suspicion is a coding issue, possibly related to a programming or coding failure. A similar issue was resolved by addressing a faulty third-party chip tuning, suggesting a professional diagnostic and reprogramming might be necessary. Checking for battery terminal corrosion is also recommended as a potential cause. Seeking professional help from a garage like Hydro's is advised to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Hey there, had quite the same scenario with my 2001 Volvo S60, Diesel. I like to think of myself having some experience but am no mechanic for sure. Found out the culprit was a dodgy third-party chip tuning messing up my car's brain. To sort it, I simply hired a pro. Hydro's Garage did me a solid, total cost was around 180 Euro. They went through all the steps, starting from diagnostics up to reprogramming the car's brain and everything in between. Sounds like your Volvo could be dealing with the same sin. Can you share some more info on the car? Maybe things like any recent modifications, and stuff like that? It'd help get a sharper view. Cheers!

Heya! So no recent modifications on my side - she's 'as is' since I bought her. Last time I had her serviced was at a local garage - changed oil and filters and such, nothing major but that was a while back when she was at 176,887 KM. Not sure if this helps but thought I'd put it out there. Also, I'll definitely check out Hydro's Garage and see if they can help me out. Thanks a tonne!

Hey, no worries! I'm glad to help. It's a bit strange that your Volvo is acting up without any recent modifications but hey, cars can be unpredictable sometimes, can't they? Anyway, with the details you've provided, it still hints at a programming or coding failure. And yeah, little maintenance like oil and filter changes generally wouldn't cause these sort of problems unless something went incredibly wrong during the process. I'd suggest maybe laying a keen eye on any corrosion around the battery terminals - those little devils can make cars act bizarre. So, the best guess is still to consult a professional for this one. Hoping Hydro's Garage will sort out your issues like they did mine. Make sure to update us, all right? Cheers and best of luck!

You're right, cars can indeed throw us a curveball! I hadn't considered checking the battery terminals for corrosion, but now I will - thanks for the tip. As for Hydro's Garage, they've been contacted and I'll have her over there soon. In the meantime, I still haven't figured out the blighter that's causing my lovely lady to act up but I'm not losing hope. You guys have been a big help! I'll definitely keep you updated once we figure out the root cause. Until then, stay safe! Thanks again, cheers!
