Seeking Advice on Overheating and A/C Issues in 2012 Volvo V70 - Potential Fan Speed Sensor Problem?

Hey everyone, I'm experiencing an odd issue with my 2012 Volvo V70 with a gasoline engine. It's been overheating lately and the A/C system won't kick in. I suspect there could be a problem with the motor fan speed sensor, but I wanted to get your insights and any possible solutions you've successfully tried. How have you guys dealt with such a problem in your workshop? Any related experiences or tips would be much appreciated!

Hey there, I've had a similar issue with my 2010 Volvo S60, which isn't too dissimilar to your V70. I'm not a mechanic, but I've got some experience with car issues and enjoy tinkering around where I can. Turned out the speed sensor was defective in my case. I ended up taking it to my local workshop where they replaced it for me. Set me back 250 quid, but solved the problem. In your case, it might be something else causing the overheating and AC issue, but the speed sensor could definitely be the culprit especially if you've noticed any idle speed irregularities. Do you know when it was last replaced? Hope this helps. Keep us updated with any progress!

Thanks for the quick answer. Really helpful insight! I honestly can't recall if the speed sensor was ever replaced. I've maintained regular service for it, the last was at 124372 KM, but I don't think they ever mentioned the sensor specifically. Given your experience, I might take it to my local mechanic and see if they can confirm if it's the speed sensor. I'll keep you posted. Cheers!

No problem at all, happy to share my experience! Good on ya for keeping up with regular servicing. It's weird how sometimes these issues can sneak past even regular checks. Given that you're unsure about the sensor, it's likely a very good idea to hit up a mechanic. They might check more than just the speed sensor though, could be a thermistor, coolant problems, or even a faulty thermostat causing your overheat. That said, y'know, doesn't hurt to check out that speed sensor just to be sure. Will look forward to hearing what they find. Take care, and hope your Volvo feels better soon!

That's exactly what I'm going to do. I reckon it's high time someone with more expertise took a crack at it. It's such a headache when you can't pinpoint the root cause. I appreciate the heads up on the other potential issues too. Hopefully, it's just one thing and not a combination. I'll drop a message here as soon as I know more. Thanks again for your help. Fingers crossed for my Volvo! Cheers!
