Seicento belt handover issue
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Fiat Seicento owner reported an issue with the belt-handover function not working, suspecting a defective belt bringer/handover. The problem was identified as likely related to the belt tensioner mechanism, which relies on proper tension and alignment. Before replacing the part, it was suggested to inspect the idler pulley and its components for wear or damage. Ultimately, the issue was confirmed to be the belt tensioner, and the repair was completed at a workshop.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't really noticed any unusual noises, but I'll definitely pay closer attention tomorrow morning when I start it up. When you mention the idler pulley, is that something I can easily inspect myself, or would it require special tools? Also, what kind of wear should I be looking for specifically?

While a visual inspection of the idler pulley can be performed without specialized tools, a thorough assessment may necessitate their use. Examine the pulley for any signs of cracking, chipping, or excessive wear on its surface. Furthermore, assess the bearing for smooth rotation and the absence of play. However, considering the involvement of the belt handover mechanism and the potential for consequential damage if not addressed correctly, seeking professional evaluation at a qualified workshop is highly recommended.

Okay, I appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – it was the belt tensioner. The total repair cost came out to 455€. Thanks again for your help!

Good day. The symptoms you describe do indeed point to a potential fault within the belt tensioner mechanism. Specifically, the belt-handover function relies on the correct tension and alignment provided by the tensioner. Before proceeding with a replacement, it would be prudent to inspect the idler pulley and its associated components for any signs of wear or damage, as these can contribute to similar issues. Could you please elaborate on any noises emanating from the engine compartment, particularly during startup or changes in engine load? This information might prove helpful.
