Seicento radio error

Help! My 2000 Fiat Seicento (gasoline engine) is driving me nuts! The radio reception is terrible. I keep getting an "Error" message on the display, sometimes there's just no sound at all, and the error memory has something stored about the audio system. Could it be the antenna? Mileage is at 174487 km now. Anyone else had this?

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Fiat Seicento owner experienced poor radio reception, an "Error" message on the display, and stored error codes related to the audio system. The issue was suspected to be a defective antenna, possibly due to a loose connection or corrosion. A suggestion was made to inspect the antenna base for corrosion and consider a professional diagnosis. Ultimately, replacing the antenna resolved the problem, restoring proper radio function.

Sounds like a real pain! Yeah, a defective antenna is the most likely culprit given those symptoms. Weak FM signal, error messages… Classic. Have you checked the antenna connection itself? Sometimes it just gets loose or corroded. Also, any recent work done on the car that might have disturbed the wiring in that area?

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the antenna connection, seemed okay, but I'm no expert. I wiggled it a bit, but no change. I haven't had any recent work done, though. Where exactly should I be looking for corrosion? And what about a signal amplifier? Could that help, or is it a waste of money if the antenna is truly defective?

Okay, if the connection seems okay, and no recent work... corrosion can be tricky to spot. Look closely at the base of the antenna where it screws into the car body. A signal amplifier might mask the problem temporarily, but if the antenna is genuinely faulty, it's a band-aid solution. Given the 'Error' message and stored error, and your mileage, I'd bet the antenna is the issue. Honestly, for a proper fix on a 2000 Seicento, I'd suggest a workshop checks it out. They have the tools to properly diagnose it.

Appreciate the advice! I took it to a local shop, and you were spot on - antenna was indeed the problem. New antenna and fitting cost me 255€. Radio's working perfectly again. Thanks!
