Siena gear shift indicator failure
Summary of the thread
The gear shift indicator on a 2008 Fiat Siena diesel is non-functional, causing issues with engaging gears, transmission slipping, and grinding noises. The problem is linked to a defective transmission control unit. A workshop diagnosis confirmed the issue, and replacing the control unit is suggested as the solution.

You mention the control unit. Could you say which specific component you mean? Is it the transmission control module, or something else?

Confirmed, it was the transmission control unit. I recommend workshop diagnosis; they can use diagnostic tools to isolate the error. In my case, replacement fixed it.

The diagnosis confirms your suspicion: control unit is defective. Repair cost is estimated at 1000€. I'll proceed with the repair, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I had a similar problem with my 2014 Opel Insignia. Check the control unit; same symptoms. Have you scanned for specific fault codes? That may give you a clue if it's the same sensor problem, but it sounds very close.
