Skoda Fabia Diesel 2011: Service light on, loss of power and strong exhaust odor - EGR valve as possible cause?

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my 2011 Skoda Fabia diesel with 175812km on the odometer. The service light is on, the engine shuts off by itself and loses power. Also, the engine is running rough, there is a strong smell of exhaust fumes and the car shakes a lot at idle. I suspect the problem could be with the EGR valve. Have any of you had similar problems and can tell me about your experience at the mechanic? I unfortunately had a bad experience last time and am therefore a little unsure. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2008 Skoda Octavia Diesel. The engine was also running rough and the vehicle was losing power. After I had it checked at my garage, they found that the EGR valve was faulty and stuck. This was actually a serious issue. They had to replace the entire EGR valve including the radiator. In the end, the car ran like clockwork again. Anyway, I would suggest getting it checked as soon as possible to avoid the damage spreading to other parts. Hope this helps you a bit!

Hey, thanks for the quick and detailed answer! Your experience really helps me. Do you happen to remember how much you paid for the repair? And have there been any other problems with it or anything else since then? I just don't want to take any chances and want to be as prepared as possible when I go to the garage. Thanks again!

No problem, always happy to help! So, I paid €355 to have the EGR valve repaired. Since the mechanic fixed the malfunction in the EGR valve, my Skoda has been running like clockwork without any further problems. So I can only recommend having it checked as soon as possible. Maintenance is always cheaper than a major repair if you wait too long. Good luck, old man!

Great, thanks for all the info! That sounds like a reasonable price. It's reassuring to hear that everything will be fine afterwards. I definitely feel better prepared now and ready to take the next step. I will be taking my car to the garage this week and hopefully my mechanic will be as knowledgeable as yours. Thanks again for the help. Keep a close eye on your Skoda and drive safe, dude! See you next time.
