Skoda Fabia Diesel EGR Valve Concerns

I'm experiencing some issues with my 2003 Skoda Fabia diesel. It seems like the EGR valve is defective. The engine power is noticeably reduced, and the check engine light is illuminated. I've also observed smoke during acceleration, rough engine running especially at idle, increased fuel consumption, and jerking when accelerating. There's also a loud hissing sound sometimes when accelerating. Could a defective EGR valve really cause all these problems, and is replacement my only option to improve vehicle emissions?

Sounds like a blocked EGR valve is the most likely cause. Is the catalytic converter still the original one? When was the air filter last replaced? A clogged air filter can sometimes exacerbate these symptoms. Have you tried using any fuel additives recently? Sometimes they can cause issues with older diesel engines.

The catalytic converter is original, and the air filter was replaced about 10,000 kilometers ago. Regarding additives, could that contribute to EGR valve issues?

Yes, it does sound very much like the EGR valve. A faulty EGR valve can definitely cause all those symptoms. It can get stuck open or closed, disrupting the exhaust gas recirculation process. This affects the air-fuel mixture, leading to rough idle, reduced power, increased smoke, and higher fuel consumption. The hissing could be exhaust gases leaking past a stuck valve. While cleaning is sometimes an option, replacement is often necessary, especially given the car's age. I'd recommend getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop to confirm, but a new EGR valve is likely the solution.

Thank you for the confirmation. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed the EGR valve was indeed the culprit. They replaced it, and the issues are resolved. The total cost was 355€.
