Did the sensor failure also point to an encoder wheel issue on the camshaft? I'm trying to understand if replacing just the sensor is a waste of time.

Yes, the fault codes pointed to the camshaft sensor, but the underlying problem was the encoder wheel. Replacing just the sensor might only be a temporary fix. It is best to have a workshop check it.

It was the camshaft sensor. The garage confirmed the encoder wheel on the camshafts was defective. Total repair cost came to 695€. Thanks for your help.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Fabia. Rough starts, stalling, and the check engine light were all present. Have you had the fault codes read? It could be related to the camshaft position sensor or even the crankshaft sensor. Engine misfire can also trigger similar symptoms.
