Skoda Fabia Eco mode problem

Alright, car gurus, I'm officially stumped! My 2002 Skoda Fabia with a diesel engine is giving me grief. The start-stop system (Eco mode) has completely packed it in. Mileage is around 72730 km. The engine shuts off alright, but then a warning light pops up on the speedometer, and there's an error stored in the error memory. I'm guessing it's a battery issue, maybe heavily discharged or defective? Has anyone else experienced this? It's driving me nuts, especially since I was hoping to save some fuel!

Sounds like a familiar problem. I had a similar issue with my Fabia's start-stop system. The error memory and warning light are dead giveaways. Did you check the car battery's voltage? Sometimes a heavily discharged battery can cause the Eco mode to freak out.

I haven't checked the voltage myself, to be honest. Where do I even start with that? And if the voltage is low, does that definitely mean it's the car battery, or could it be something else draining it? I'm just trying to figure out if there's anything else I should be looking at before I shell out for a new battery.

Yep, low voltage is almost certainly the culprit. Think of it like this: the start-stop needs a healthy car battery to restart the engine quickly and reliably. If the voltage is low, the car figures it can't risk it. Best bet is to get the battery properly tested at a workshop. They can also check for any parasitic drain, but I'd bet on the battery being the issue. Get it replaced, and I reckon your Eco mode will be back in action. Don't bother with any DIY repairs for a battery issue, it is not worth it.

Just wanted to let you know. You were spot on! Took my Fabia to the shop, and they confirmed it was the car battery. New battery installed, and the Eco mode is working perfectly now. Total cost was 290€. Thanks a million for your help!
