Throttle position, eh? How would I go about checking that? Is it something I can do myself with basic tools, or does it require some fancy diagnostic equipment? I'm fairly handy, but don't want to mess anything up. Is the throttle valve easily accessible to even take a peek at?

Yes, the throttle position sensor is often integrated into the throttle body itself. Checking it properly typically requires a diagnostic tool to read the sensor values. Given the symptoms and your mileage, it might be best to have a workshop inspect the throttle body and the accelerator pedal module directly. They can perform tests you likely can't do at home. It does sound like your issue.

Right, after much faffing about, I bit the bullet and took it to the local garage. Turns out it WAS the accelerator pedal module causing the throttle valve to misbehave. New module fitted and all in, it set me back about 205€. Fuel efficiency seems back to normal too. Thanks for the advice!

High fuel consumption and poor starting on a Kamiq often points to issues with the throttle body. Has the throttle position been checked? A faulty throttle position sensor can definitely cause these symptoms.
