Skoda Karoq Diesel Engine Stalling at Idle

I am writing to inquire about a potential issue I'm experiencing with my 2020 Skoda Karoq diesel. The vehicle has approximately 208115 km on the odometer. Recently, the car has been exhibiting poor starting behavior and a tendency to stall at idle. Furthermore, the check engine light has illuminated. Based on my preliminary assessment, I suspect a defective camshaft sensor. I understand this sensor plays a crucial role in engine control and that a faulty encoder wheel on the camshafts could be the source of the problem. What could I do to further investigate?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Skoda Karoq diesel with 208,115 km is experiencing poor starting and stalling at idle, accompanied by an illuminated check engine light. The suspected cause is a defective camshaft sensor or a faulty encoder wheel on the camshafts, which are crucial for engine control. A suggested solution is to have the sensor tested at a workshop, where an oscilloscope can confirm if the sensor signal is erratic. Replacing the faulty component should resolve the issue, as confirmed by a similar case where the car ran smoothly after repair.

I had similar symptoms with my Skoda Karoq. Rough starts, stalling, and that dreaded check engine light. It could be related to the camshaft position sensor. Have you tried any sensor testing? The engine control unit relies on that sensor for ignition timing. Does the error code point directly to the camshaft sensor?

Thank you for the information. You mentioned a similar issue with your Karoq. Was it indeed the camshaft sensor in your case? And if so, how was the diagnosis confirmed?

Yes, in my case, the diagnostic pointed to the camshaft position sensor. The mechanic used an oscilloscope to confirm the signal from the sensor was erratic. It is wise to bring it to a trusted workshop. They can perform proper sensor testing to verify the diagnosis. If the sensor is faulty, replacing it should resolve those symptoms.

The camshaft sensor was indeed defective, or rather, the encoder wheel was. I took it to a certified workshop. The final bill came to 695€ including parts and labor. The car is running smoothly again. Thank you for your insight.
