Skoda Karoq Poor Fuel Economy and Stalling

I have a 2022 Skoda Karoq with a gasoline engine and about 83000 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed the fuel economy has gotten really bad, and the engine sometimes stalls when I'm stopped at a light. The check engine light is also on. Could it be a defective mass air flow meter? I have also observed smoke when accelerating. Any thoughts?

That sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my Ford Focus a few years back. Same symptoms: poor fuel economy, check engine light, and the engine would sometimes stall, especially when idling. It turned out to be a faulty mass air flow sensor as well. Did you notice any black smoke when accelerating?

Yes, that's exactly what's happening. I do see black smoke when I accelerate sometimes. So, you're pretty sure it was the mass air flow sensor in your case? Was it an easy repair, or did you have to take it to a mechanic?

Yep, pretty sure. The black smoke is a telltale sign of an incorrect air-fuel ratio, which is what happens when the mass air flow sensor isn't working right. I took mine to a mechanic because I didn't have the right tools or know-how to replace it myself. It's probably best to get it checked out properly. They can confirm the diagnosis and replace the sensor if needed.

The workshop confirmed the mass air flow sensor was faulty. They replaced it, and the car runs perfectly now. Fuel economy is back to normal, the check engine light is off, and the stalling is gone. The total cost was 365€.
