Good point about the auxiliary belt. How would I check the alignment myself? I'm reasonably handy, but don't have specialized tools.

Checking alignment without proper tools is tricky. You could visually inspect the belt for unusual wear patterns – that might indicate a problem. But honestly, if you're not sure, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. A failing tensioner can cause serious damage if the belt snaps. It sounds like you know your stuff, but it's probably best to be on the safe side. Especially since you are noticing belt squeal.

Thanks for the insights. Took it to a workshop, you were right. Defective belt tensioner, exactly as suspected. Cost me 455€ to get it sorted. Running smooth again.

Hmm, a belt handover issue on a hybrid Octavia that new? That's unusual. I'm no expert, but could there be something else causing the tensioner to fail prematurely? Maybe check the auxiliary belt and pulleys for alignment or damage? Is the engine mount okay?
