Battery voltage seems ok with a multimeter. The warning light is constantly on. Any further ideas before I bite the bullet and take it in?

If the battery voltage is stable and the warning light is constant, then a defective generator is highly probable. The symptoms you describe all point in that direction. I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop to confirm the diagnosis and get a quote for replacement.

Confirmed, it was the generator. Replaced it, total cost 960€. Thanks for the input.

Sounds like a classic alternator issue. Have you checked the battery voltage? A failing alternator often leads to a battery low situation, which can then cause engine misfire and starting problems. Could also put a strain on the starter motor. Is the warning light constantly on, or does it flicker?
