Skoda Praktik air con issues

My 2010 Skoda Praktik diesel's air con has packed it in. Error in the memory, no cold air, AC won't switch on, and the light's on in the dash. Garage says it's a knackered AC control unit. Quoted 980€. Seems steep.

I had similar AC unit issues with my Praktik. The AC compressor wouldn't engage, and the vehicle HVAC system was throwing error codes. In my case, the auto refrigerant pressure was fine. Have you checked the AC compressor clutch relay? It's a common failure point. Also, inspect the wiring harness for any damage or corrosion. A faulty connection can prevent the AC compressor from receiving power. A diagnostic scan might pinpoint the fault, but sometimes it requires a bit of detective work.

Relay and wiring, got it. Where exactly is that relay located? And what kind of 'detective work' are we talking about?

The relay location can vary slightly, but it's usually in the engine compartment's fuse box. Consult your owner's manual for the exact location; it should be labeled something like 'AC compressor relay'. By detective work, I mean systematically checking each component. For example, testing the relay with a multimeter to see if it's functioning correctly. If the relay is good, you'd then check the wiring for continuity and shorts. If you're not comfortable with electrical testing, I'd advise taking it to a workshop. 980€ is indeed a hefty price. Unfortunately, with auto AC repair, AC compressor and refrigerant work, costs can escalate quickly.

Cheers for the help. Garage confirmed it, AC control unit was faulty. Cost a bomb, like you said, 980€. At least it's fixed.
