Skoda Rapid Diesel Engine Stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Skoda Rapid diesel is experiencing poor starting and occasional stalling, with the check engine light illuminated. The initial suspicion is a defective camshaft sensor, but it could also be a faulty crankshaft sensor. Sensor testing is suggested but recommended to be handled by professionals. Ultimately, the issue is confirmed to be the encoder wheel on the camshafts, which is repaired, resolving the problem.

The check engine light is steady. I suspected a faulty sensor, but is there a way to be certain it's the camshaft sensor and not something else? I've heard about sensor testing, is that something I could do myself?

Sensor testing is possible, but you'll need the right tools and knowledge. It's usually best left to professionals. Given the symptoms and the check engine light being on, it really does sound like a defective camshaft position sensor issue or potentially the encoder wheel on the camshafts. I'd recommend taking it to a reputable workshop for a proper diagnosis. Why risk making it worse, right?

I appreciate your input! It turned out to be the encoder wheel on the camshafts. The workshop confirmed it. Unfortunately, the damage was significant enough that the repair came to 695€. But at least my Skoda Rapid is running smoothly again.

Sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same symptoms – poor starting, stalling, check engine light – on my old Opel Astra. Have you checked the crankshaft sensor as well? Sometimes a faulty crankshaft sensor can mimic camshaft sensor issues. Is the check engine light flashing or just steady?
