Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, it's definitely worse when the engine is cold. I'm not really experienced with multimeters, so how exactly would I test them?

If it's worse when cold, and you're getting a glow plug error, I'd bet it's the culprit. Since you're not comfortable with a multimeter, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and replace the faulty glow plugs. Otherwise, you will be chasing your tail. I'd expect it to be about 440€ for the job.

I took the Roomster to a workshop, and they confirmed the glow plugs were faulty. The replacement set me back 440€, but it runs great now. Thanks for the assistance!

Sounds like a glow plug issue. Does it only happen on cold starts? Have you noticed any smoke from the exhaust when it struggles? Rough idle can really point to those being the problem, especially in a diesel. It's easy enough to check them with a multimeter if you're handy with tools.
