That sounds frustrating! I had something similar happen with my Skoda Octavia diesel. The reduced power and the exhaust smell were awful. Have you checked the diesel particulate filter at all? Maybe a forced DPF regeneration is needed?

Interesting. When you had that experience with your Octavia, did the forced DPF regeneration resolve the issue permanently, or did you need to replace any parts? Also, did your car show the exact same symptoms - warning light, reduced power and smoke?

In my case, the DPF regeneration only provided a temporary fix. The warning light and reduced power returned shortly after. Eventually, the workshop identified a faulty sensor related to the DPF. I'd suggest getting it professionally diagnosed to pinpoint the exact cause.
