Skoda Yeti engine control unit issue

Okay, I'm officially stressed out. My 2017 Skoda Yeti with a gasoline engine is playing up big time. It has done 130530 km. Engine performance is seriously down, and the error memory is showing a defective engine control unit. Could this be a faulty computer module? It's driving me nuts! Is this an issue with the engine control system? Any ideas what might be wrong before I end up with a massive repair bill?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Skoda Yeti with a gasoline engine and 130,530 km is experiencing reduced engine performance, with the error memory indicating a defective engine control unit (ECU). A potential cause for this issue could be a faulty main relay, which is crucial for the automotive electronics control system. Replacing the defective main relay resolved the problem, restoring the ECU's functionality and avoiding the need for a costly ECU replacement.

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my Yeti – though I can't remember the exact year of mine. Reduced engine power, felt like I was towing a boat anchor. Did you check the main relay? It's like the heart of the automotive electronics control system, sending signals to the computer module. If that's dodgy, it can send all sorts of weird signals to the engine control. Definitely worth a look before you start thinking about a new ECU.

Interesting! Where is the main relay located, and how did you figure out it was the problem? I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to automotive electronics, so any pointers would be super helpful! Is it something I can check myself, or am I better off just taking it to a workshop?

Okay, so the main relay thing… Yeah, it was causing the same symptoms for me. Felt like the engine control wasn't getting enough juice, if that makes sense. Honestly, unless you're really comfortable poking around with automotive electronics, I'd suggest getting a workshop to take a look. They can test the relay properly and confirm if that's the issue. Plus, if it IS the ECU, they'll be able to diagnose that properly too. Better safe than sorry, especially with something as important as the engine control.

Huge thanks for the help! It turned out to be a defective main relay, just like you suspected. New relay, and the ECU is working perfectly again. Cost me 120€, which is way better than a whole new ECU. I really appreciate you sharing your experience!
