SM5 Check Engine Light Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Renault SM5 experienced a check engine light and power loss, with a diagnostic check revealing an error code. The issue was linked to a third-party chip tuning, which can interfere with the engine's computer. The solution involved resetting and remapping the ECU by a mechanic, resolving the problem and restoring the car's performance.

Yes, actually, the previous owner mentioned something about a third-party chip tuning. Why do you ask? Is that a common cause for these kinds of issues?

Well, those aftermarket tunings can sometimes mess with the engine's computer. My Astra had the same problem after a cheap chip tune. It ended up needing some work at the shop to get things sorted. I'd recommend taking it to a mechanic you trust to get it checked out.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a mechanic, and it turns out the faulty chip tuning was indeed the problem. They had to reset the ECU and remap it. Cost me 180€, but at least it's running smoothly again.

Hey, I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra a few years back. Check engine light, power loss, the whole shebang. Did you recently get any work done on the car, like maybe a chip tuning or anything like that?
