SM5 electronic parking brake failure

My 2003 Renault SM5 with a gasoline engine is freaking me out. The electronic parking brake is totally dead, the dashboard is lit up, and the error memory is storing errors. Is this a total brake failure waiting to happen? Has anyone else had this happen?

Sounds familiar! I have an SM5 too, and I had a similar problem with the electronic parking brake a while back. Is the brake engaging or disengaging at all, or is it just completely unresponsive? It could be a simple sensor issue, or something more complicated.

Completely unresponsive! Pushing the button does absolutely nothing. You mentioned a sensor issue... what kind of sensor are we talking about? And where is it located? Is that something I could maybe check myself before taking it to a mechanic?

Right, completely unresponsive sounds like what I had. Honestly, I'm no expert. There are a lot of sensors in modern cars. In my case, I took it to the workshop, and they told me it was the electric motor in the brake calliper itself that was defective. They said it's a fairly common problem. I’d advise that you get it checked out as it is a safety issue.

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info! I booked an appointment with my local mechanic. They quoted me about 505€ for the repair. Hopefully, that fixes it. Thanks again!
