SM5 Manifold Pressure Sensor Failure

I'm at my wit's end! My 2002 Renault SM5, gasoline engine, is giving me fits. The check engine light is mocking me, power is seriously lacking, and it responds like a grumpy old man. I'm burning through fuel like it's going out of style! I'm betting it's got something to do with a vacuum leak, but where do I even START looking?! Mileage is only 46344 km too, this is ridiculous!

Summary of the thread

The initial problem involved a 2002 Renault SM5 experiencing a lack of power, excessive fuel consumption, and an illuminated check engine light. The suspected cause was a vacuum leak. A suggestion was made to check the manifold pressure sensor, which could malfunction due to a vacuum leak. Upon visiting a workshop, it was confirmed that the manifold pressure sensor was faulty and the vacuum lines were cracked, leading to their replacement and resolving the issue.

I understand your frustration. I had similar symptoms in my Opel Astra a few years back. Reduced power, engine light... turned out to be a faulty manifold pressure sensor. Have you checked that? A large vacuum leak could certainly cause that sensor to malfunction.

A manifold pressure sensor, huh? Interesting... Where exactly IS that located, and is it something I could potentially replace myself, or am I looking at a mechanic's bill here?

The location can vary, but it's usually attached to the intake manifold. Given the symptoms and potential vacuum leak, it is likely the sensor. While some people do DIY replacements, I'd recommend a workshop visit to confirm the diagnosis and ensure proper installation. They can also check for those leaks!

Okay, thanks so much for the advice! I took it to the workshop as you suggested. Turns out, the manifold pressure sensor WAS kaput, just like you thought, and the vacuum lines were cracked. Sensor replacement and new lines cost me 235€. Runs like a charm now!
