Smart Forfour Engine Temp Issues Need Urgent Fix

My Smart Forfour 2021 (gas, 107364 KM) has been acting strange lately with temperature readings. The dash shows weird temp values, check engine light is on, and the engine takes forever to warm up properly. Thinking it might be related to a cooling grille issue since I noticed some debris buildup there. Has anyone dealt with similar automotive cooling problems? Really want to avoid another bad mechanic experience, so looking for advice on what to check and where to get it fixed properly.

As a Smart ForTwo 2018 owner, I encountered similar thermal management symptoms. The erratic temperature readings and slow warm-up times typically point to either a faulty coolant temperature sensor or compromised engine cooling system components. In my case, it turned out to be a combination of issues. The radiator grille was indeed clogged with debris, restricting proper airflow. However, the main culprit was a failed temperature sensor, which caused incorrect readings and triggered the check engine light. The repair involved: Cleaning the cooling grille and radiator fins, Replacing the coolant temperature sensor, Performing a diagnostic system reset, Verifying proper coolant levels, Testing the thermostat operation While the sensor replacement itself was straightforward, leaving it unfixed could have led to serious engine damage due to incorrect temperature regulation. The engine control unit relies on accurate temperature data to manage fuel mixture and timing. You should have this diagnosed soon, as inaccurate temperature readings can affect engine performance and fuel efficiency. The debris in your automotive cooling system should be addressed regardless of other issues, as proper airflow through the radiator grille is essential for maintaining optimal engine temperatures.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Your repair checklist matches what I went through with my Smart Forfour last winter. The thermal management system was acting up, and I had similar concerns about engine overheating. The radiator blockage turned out to be worse than expected. Getting it fixed made a huge difference. Could you share what the total repair cost was in your case? Also wondering if youve noticed any other cooling-related issues since the work was done? My repair happened about 6 months ago and so far the engine cooling system has been working perfectly.

After getting my Smart ForTwo checked by the mechanic, the restricted airflow issue from the clogged cooling grille was completely resolved. The total repair came to 52€ for replacing a defective fuse that was also affecting the temperature sensor readings. Since the repair, the engine cooling system has performed flawlessly. No more erratic temperature readings or slow warm-up times. The engine now maintains proper operating temperature, and the check engine light has stayed off. The cost was minimal compared to the peace of mind of preventing potential engine overheating issues. Getting the radiator blockage cleared made the biggest impact, the airflow is now optimal and the cooling system works exactly as designed. Having a properly functioning temperature management system is crucial for engine longevity.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I finally got my Smart Forfour checked at a local specialist garage last week. The total repair bill came to 180€, which included cleaning out severe radiator blockage and replacing a worn coolant temperature sensor. The mechanic showed me the buildup of leaves and debris behind the radiator grille, it was pretty shocking how restricted the airflow had become. They also found the temperature sensor was giving false readings, exactly like others mentioned. After the repair, the engine warms up normally now and maintains steady temperature. The check engine light is gone and everything runs smoother. The cooling system is working perfectly, probably the best 180€ I have spent on the car. Really glad I caught this early before it caused any serious engine damage. Getting proper diagnostics and repair from a specialist was definitely the right call.
