Thanks for sharing your experience. This matches what I am seeing with my Fortwo. The malfunction shows up exactly as you described, constant phone drops and system memory errors. Quick follow up, what was the total cost for the diagnosis and repair in your case? Also, has the fix been holding up since then, or have you noticed any new electrical system issues? My engine light started flickering occasionally too, so I am trying to determine if this could be related to the same ground connection problem you mentioned.

Thankfully the fix has been rock solid since the repair three months ago. The connectivity issues and electrical faults disappeared completely once the incorrect pairing problem was properly diagnosed and fixed. The function restrictions that were plaguing the system are now gone, the phone connects instantly and stays connected. It was much simpler than initially feared, requiring only a reset and proper repairing of the communications module rather than the extensive ground connection work my case first suggested. The total repair cost was just 45€ for the diagnostic work and system reset. This is far less than the 500€+ estimate I was initially given for replacing components. Regarding your flickering engine light, this likely points to a separate fuel system or sensor issue rather than being connected to the communication malfunction. Would recommend getting that checked separately, as mixing up different fault causes can lead to unnecessary repairs. Must say getting this fixed by a qualified shop made a huge difference compared to the attempts at DIY troubleshooting. The proper diagnostic equipment really helped identify the exact source of the electrical system problems.

After multiple failed attempts with unreliable shops, I finally found a mechanic who properly diagnosed the connectivity malfunction. The experience matched what you shared about system memory issues and phone connection problems. The diagnostic showed my ignition system was causing interference with the communications module. The mechanic performed a full system scan, cleaned the connections, and reflashed the module firmware. The entire repair took about 4 hours and cost 280€, including parts and labor. The steering and brakes were also inspected since I mentioned the occasional engine light flicker. Turns out they were unrelated to the connectivity problems. The mechanic confirmed the ground connections were solid and no additional electrical work was needed. Its been 2 weeks since the repair and the system works perfectly, no more connection drops or error messages. The engine light has also stayed off. Looking back, finding a shop with proper diagnostic equipment made all the difference in getting this fixed right the first time. Really appreciate the detailed advice you shared. It helped me ask the right questions during the repair process and understand what was actually needed versus unnecessary replacements.

Had this exact issue with my Smart ForFour CDI from 2015. The connectivity problems started showing up in the multimedia system, constantly dropping Bluetooth connections and storing error codes in the system memory. Initially thought it was a simple transmission control module communication error, but diagnostic testing revealed corruption in the main communications module. The root cause was a failing ground connection that created voltage fluctuations, affecting the entire electrical system. The fix required: Complete system diagnostic scan, Cleaning and securing all ground connections, Resetting and reflashing the communications module, Updating system firmware, Testing all drivetrain communication protocols This was a serious repair that took multiple days to properly diagnose and fix. Simply replacing parts without addressing the underlying electrical issue would have been wasteful. Before visiting another shop, check: If the issue happens with multiple phones, Whether the problem occurs only while driving or also when stationary, If other electrical systems show intermittent failures, Whether error codes persist after battery disconnection Would strongly recommend finding a shop with certified diagnostic equipment for Smart vehicles, as generic scanners often miss the deeper electrical system issues.
