SMAX tailgate hall sensor fault
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Ford SMAX is experiencing a tailgate hall sensor fault, preventing the tailgate from opening fully. The issue is suspected to be related to sensor wiring or plug connections. It is suggested to inspect the wiring loom for any fractures or breaks, as these are common due to repeated tailgate use. A visual inspection followed by a multimeter check for continuity is recommended, and if unresolved, a professional workshop visit is advised. The problem was ultimately resolved by replacing a defective cable.

Thanks for the quick response. By 'loom's condition,' do you mean a visual inspection, or should I be probing with a multimeter?

Visual inspection first. Look for any obvious breaks or kinks in the wiring. If that looks okay, then yes, you'll need a multimeter to check for continuity. But honestly, given the symptoms, and if you're not comfortable with electrical diagnostics, I'd advise a workshop visit.

Thanks for the insight. Appreciate the cautious advice. Ended up being a defective cable as you suggested, replaced at the shop, cost 95€. All sorted now.

I had a similar issue with my SMAX automatic tailgate. Check the wiring loom where it enters the tailgate; they're prone to fracturing with repeated opening and closing. It's like bending a paperclip back and forth until it snaps. Have you checked the loom's condition?
