Sonata Diesel EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Hyundai Sonata diesel exhibited reduced power, a check engine light, smoke on acceleration, rough engine performance, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggested a defective EGR valve, which was confirmed after a professional diagnosis. The EGR valve was replaced, resolving the issues and restoring smooth operation.

Thanks. No recent work. Where exactly should I be looking for those vacuum leaks? Any specific spots prone to failure?

Given the symptoms, I would suggest getting a professional diagnosis. The EGR valve itself is likely jammed or defective, and the hissing sound could indicate a significant exhaust leak related to it. It's best to confirm before throwing parts at it. I had a similar experience.

Appreciate the input. Took it to the shop, and you were spot on. EGR valve defective, total cost 355€. Replaced and running smoothly now.

I had similar symptoms with my Sonata. Check for vacuum leaks around the EGR valve and intake manifold first. A faulty catalytic converter can also cause similar issues, so rule that out. Any recent work done on the vehicle emissions system?
