No misfiring that I've noticed. I haven't read the error codes yet. Camshaft sensor... is that something I can easily check myself?

Checking it yourself might be tricky without the right tools and knowledge. If it is the camshaft sensor, the encoder wheel on the camshafts themselves might be defective. Given the symptoms and mileage, sensor failure is plausible. I'd recommend getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop.

Thanks for the advice. Took it to the workshop; you were right, it was the camshaft sensor. The bill was 695€. All fixed now.

Sounds like a sensor issue. Rough starts and stalling are common with those. Is it misfiring at all? Have you had the error codes read? Could be ignition timing or something related to the engine control unit freaking out. A faulty camshaft sensor could cause those symptoms.
