Sprinter automatic transmission issue in Park

My 2006 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine and about 62089 km is having trouble. The automatic transmission seems faulty in Park. It won't start, the check engine light is on, and the gearbox slips. Error codes are stored. Could a bad control unit cause transmission issues? I'm worried about the shift lock and transmission sensor. Repair is estimated at 1000€.

Whoa, sounds rough! I had a similar headache with my Sprinter, also automatic. I was getting weird symptoms, like the van not wanting to start sometimes, especially when parked on a hill. Did you check the park brake switch? It might be sending the wrong signal to the transmission.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you tell me more about your issue and how you figured out it was the park brake switch? Any details would help.

Sure thing. My Sprinter was acting up sometimes, the engine wouldn't crank in Park. The mechanic ran diagnostics and said the transmission sensor was giving false readings. It thought the van wasn't in Park, so it wouldn't start. I'd get it checked out to be sure.

Thanks for the help. I took it to a shop, and it was a bad control unit, like I thought, causing the automatic transmission problems. They replaced it, and it's fixed. Thanks again.
