Sprinter Diesel Exhaust Temperature Sensor Issue

My 2012 Mercedes Sprinter diesel is having some issues. The check engine light is on, engine power is reduced, and fuel consumption is up. A diagnostic check shows a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. I suspect an exhaust leak is affecting the sensor. Has anyone else experienced this and can offer advice? I'm trying to understand the implications for the engine and emissions. I think repairs will be around 265€.

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Mercedes Sprinter diesel is experiencing issues with the check engine light, reduced engine power, and increased fuel consumption, attributed to a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. The suspected cause is an exhaust leak affecting the sensor. It is advised to inspect common leak areas, such as joints and connections in the exhaust system, for hissing sounds. A professional inspection confirmed a leak near the catalytic converter, and repairs resolved the issue.

I had a similar issue with my Sprinter. The temperature sensor went bad and the check engine light came on. Reduced power was definitely noticeable. Check for exhaust leaks before replacing the sensor. That was my problem.

When you say check for exhaust leaks, where are the most common leak areas? I want to inspect those spots before replacing the temperature sensor.

I'm no expert, but I recall the mechanic saying the joints and connections in the exhaust system are the usual suspects, anywhere the pipes connect. Listen for hissing sounds when the engine is running; that indicates a leak. Otherwise, a workshop can find the leak and confirm the fault.

I appreciate your input. It seems best to have a professional inspect the exhaust system. I took it to a local workshop and they found a leak near the catalytic converter, affecting the temperature sensor. The repair was 265€, as expected. The problem is now resolved. Thank you again.
