Sprinter engine stalls at idle suspect tank ventilation

My 2006 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine is giving me fits. The check engine light illuminated recently, and now the engine stalls at idle. I suspect a problem with the tank ventilation valve. I've scanned the OBD codes, and it points towards the EVAP system. I've checked the pressure sensor, and it seems to be functioning. Could clogged hoses in the tank ventilation system be the culprit?

I have a Sprinter myself, though I am not sure about the build year, and I had similar problems some time ago. Check Engine light and stalling. In my case, it was the purge valve that was malfunctioning. The purge valve is part of the EVAP system, which is short for Evaporative Emission Control System. This system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Is the purge valve the same as the tank ventilation valve?

I am not sure if the purge valve and tank ventilation valve are the same thing. Where is the purge valve located in your Sprinter? Is it difficult to access and inspect? What exactly was wrong with yours? Was it stuck open or closed, or was the electrical connector faulty?

I'm no expert, so I cannot tell you if the purge valve is the same as the tank ventilation valve. I took it to a workshop, so I cannot tell you about the location of the purge valve. They told me the purge valve was defective, so they replaced it. Perhaps you should take it to the workshop like I did.

Thanks for the suggestion. I inspected the hoses connected to the tank ventilation valve and found them clogged with debris. After clearing the blockage, the engine idles smoothly, and the check engine light is off. I cleared the error codes. The tank ventilation is working again. Repair cost was 175€
