Sprinter no start issue

My 2006 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine won't start It has about 154368 km on it I suspect an engine control malfunction but I'm not sure where to start I had a check engine light on a while back, and sometimes the engine would surge a little at idle Any ideas

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine wouldn't start, and the owner suspected an engine control malfunction due to a previous check engine light and engine surging. The issue was suggested to be potentially electrical, with a recommendation to check and clean the battery cable connections, as dirty terminals can mimic more severe ECU problems. After cleaning the corroded terminals, the vehicle started successfully, resolving the issue without needing further costly diagnostics.

Sounds frustrating A no-start condition combined with a check engine light and engine surge definitely points towards something electrical Before jumping to conclusions about ECU failure, which can be pricey, double-check your battery cable connections Make sure they're clean and tight A bad connection can cause all sorts of weird electrical problems that mimic a much bigger ECU issue Have you tried cleaning the terminals

I haven't cleaned the terminals yet, but I did wiggle them a bit, and they seemed secure Is it really that common for dirty terminals to cause such a major problem What's the best way to clean them

Oh, absolutely Dirty terminals are like clogged arteries for your car's electrical system Even if they seem tight, corrosion can build up and block the flow of electricity You can clean them with a wire brush and some baking soda mixed with water If that doesn't fix it, and given your previous engine surge and check engine light, I'd recommend getting it scanned by a workshop to rule out a deeper ECU issue It could be a simple sensor problem, but they'll have the right tools to diagnose it properly

You were spot on I cleaned the battery cable connections really well, and she fired right up Apparently, they were corroded enough to cause a major voltage drop I got the bill for 155€ at the workshop Thanks a bunch for the advice, you saved me a lot of stress
