SQ8 Exhaust Sensor Failure Causing Power Drop

My SQ8 started acting up with the check engine light and noticeable power loss. Fuel economy took a hit too. My research points to a failing exhaust sensor, but after a previous bad experience with mechanics, I want to be sure before taking it in. Anyone dealt with similar temperature sensor issues on their Audi? Car specs: 2020 SQ8 gasoline, 159401km on the clock. Looking for insights on diagnosis and repair costs.

Had a similar situation with my 2017 Audi S7. The temperature sensor failure triggered the check engine light and caused noticeable performance issues. The exhaust system showed signs of a small leak near the connection point, which was affecting the temperature readings. The engine management system was receiving incorrect temperature fluctuation data, causing it to run a richer fuel mixture as a protective measure. This explains your power loss and increased fuel consumption. In my case, the exhaust component damage was more extensive than just the sensor. The leak had allowed moisture to corrode the surrounding area, requiring replacement of both the sensor and a section of the exhaust system. This turned into a serious repair as the corrosion had spread to nearby components. The symptoms match perfectly, when exhaust gases escape before reaching the sensor, it disrupts temperature readings and triggers the engine management system to alter performance settings. Getting this diagnosed early prevents additional damage to other exhaust components. Would strongly suggest having it checked soon, as running with faulty temperature sensor readings can lead to more significant engine management issues over time.

Thanks for sharing your S7 experience. Your description matches exactly what I am seeing with my SQ8. This makes me more confident about the temperature sensor diagnosis. The emission control system seems quite sensitive to these issues. How much did the full repair end up costing you? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix? I want to budget properly and make sure I catch any related problems early. A bit worried now about potential exhaust system corrosion after what you mentioned about moisture damage. My car is newer but better safe than sorry when it comes to these kinds of car exhaust problems.

After visiting the mechanic last week, my initial diagnosis was confirmed. The faulty exhaust temperature sensor was indeed the root cause. The emission control system was reading incorrect values, which explained all the symptoms. During inspection, they found a minor leak in the exhaust system, but caught it early enough to prevent any serious corrosion damage. The full repair came to 265 Euro, which included sensor replacement and fixing the small leak. Much better than letting it develop into a bigger problem. The car has been running perfectly since the fix. Fuel economy is back to normal, and the engine management system is working as intended with accurate temperature readings. No more check engine light or power issues. Given your SQ8 is newer, you might avoid some of the wear-related problems I encountered. Still, temperature sensor issues can affect any vehicle age, so getting it checked promptly was definitely the right call.

My exhaust sensor saga is finally resolved. Took the car to a specialist who diagnosed the exact issue within an hour, a faulty temperature sensor combined with a small exhaust leak, just as suggested here. The repair process was straightforward. They replaced the temperature sensor and fixed a minor crack in the exhaust component near the connection point. Total bill came to 420 Euro, which included diagnostic time and parts. More than I hoped but less than I feared. The emission control system is now working perfectly. Engine management light is gone, power is back to normal, and fuel economy has improved significantly. No more worrying about potential damage to other components. Glad I caught this early. The mechanic mentioned these issues can cascade into bigger problems if left unchecked. The car feels like new again, and the whole experience was much better than my previous repair encounters.
