Stilo Diesel EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Fiat Stilo diesel exhibited low power, a check engine light, rough running, increased fuel consumption, and black smoke during acceleration, leading to suspicion of an EGR valve issue. Black smoke and rough performance suggested the EGR valve might be stuck open, causing over-fuelling. It was advised to check for vacuum leaks but ultimately recommended to have the EGR valve professionally inspected. The EGR valve was confirmed faulty and replaced, resolving the issues.

Smoke is definitely black. I haven't specifically checked for vacuum leaks. Where would you suggest I start looking?

Black smoke points more towards the EGR being stuck open, causing over-fuelling. Vacuum leaks can mimic some of the symptoms, but not usually the black smoke. Given your symptoms, get the EGR valve checked professionally. It'll likely need replacing. Emissions tests will fail miserably with a dodgy EGR.

Took it to the workshop as suggested. EGR valve was indeed knackered. 355€ later, all sorted and running sweet again.

I had something similar with my Stilo: reduced power, check engine light, and rough running. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Look into that before condemning the EGR valve. Is the smoke black or blueish?
