Subaru Legacy Multiple System Failures Need Help

My 2005 Subaru Legacy diesel is having multiple system failures and error messages. The speedometer keeps showing warnings and various vehicle systems are not working properly. I suspect the radar calibration might be off or there could be issues with the automotive sensors. Has anyone experienced similar problems? The car has 69593 km on it and I need advice before taking it back to a mechanic since my last repair experience was not great. Any tips on finding a reliable shop that can properly diagnose electronic issues, especially with radar and collision avoidance systems?

Had similar sensor failure issues with my 2008 Subaru Outback diesel. The symptoms match what you describe, multiple system malfunctions and driving assistance features stopped working correctly. The problem turned out to be dirt and road debris accumulation on the front radar sensor behind the Subaru badge. The collision avoidance system was getting faulty readings, triggering cascading errors across other vehicle systems. The fix required: Complete sensor cleaning and recalibration, Replacement of corroded wiring harness connected to the radar unit, Software update to the sensor control module While not a major mechanical issue, proper diagnosis was crucial since sensor malfunction can affect critical safety systems. The repair involved specialized diagnostic equipment to properly reset and calibrate the automotive sensors. Key advice: Look for shops with Subaru diagnostic certification, Request detailed sensor testing before any repairs, Ensure they can properly calibrate radar systems, Get documentation of all diagnostic steps performed Regular sensor cleaning and calibration checks help prevent these issues from recurring. Given your mileage, it would be worth having all driving assistance sensors inspected as preventive maintenance.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree this sounds quite similar to what I faced with my 2005 Legacy when the electronic issues started appearing. The adaptive cruise and other systems were acting up out of nowhere too. Would you mind sharing how much the repair ended up costing? Also curious if youve had any recurring problems with the automotive sensors since getting it fixed? Looking to budget for potential repairs and wondering if I should expect additional calibration work down the line. The shop I usually go to isnt very experienced with radar calibration and collision avoidance systems.

Just wanted to update on the repair costs since you asked, the total came to only 45€ for cleaning and recalibrating the radar sensor. The mechanic found it was simply dirt buildup causing the sensor failure, much simpler than my initial repair. Since having it properly cleaned, all the electronic issues and system warnings have completely cleared up. The adaptive cruise and collision avoidance systems are working perfectly again. Unlike my previous sensor malfunction problems that needed extensive work, this time it was a straightforward fix. Keeping the sensor clean has prevented any recurring issues. A good preventive tip is having the automotive sensors checked during regular service to catch any potential problems early. Most Subaru-certified shops now have the right diagnostic equipment to properly test and calibrate these systems. If your regular shop lacks experience with radar calibration, it might be worth finding one specializing in Subaru electronic systems for this specific repair. The investment in proper diagnosis can save money in the long run by avoiding unnecessary parts replacement.

Thanks for the advice. I finally got the car checked and wanted to share my experience. After researching shops specializing in automotive sensors, I found a certified Subaru technician who properly diagnosed the issue. The main problem was indeed a sensor malfunction caused by a damaged wiring harness feeding incorrect data to multiple systems. The total repair came to 380€ including: New wiring harness, Complete radar calibration, System diagnostic testing, Safety systems verification The electronic issues are now completely resolved. The speedometer, collision warning, and other features are working properly again. The radar calibration was definitely worth the investment and I noticed improved performance of all driver assistance features. For anyone facing similar problems, my advice is to find a shop with proper diagnostic equipment that specifically handles electronic issues. Trying to save money with an inexperienced mechanic actually costs more in the long run.
