Suburban Jerking and Stalling

Hi, I have a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban with a diesel engine. It's got about 22343 km on it. Recently, I've noticed it jerks when accelerating, the check engine light is on, and the error memory has a stored error. Engine power seems reduced, and sometimes it even stalls at idle. Plus, the engine runs rough and there's a strong exhaust smell. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Chevrolet Suburban with a diesel engine was experiencing jerking during acceleration, a check engine light, reduced engine power, stalling at idle, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms suggested a potential issue with the intake manifold, possibly due to a vacuum leak or a defective intake manifold gasket. A professional inspection confirmed the intake manifold was defective due to scorching, and the issue was resolved with a repair.

Greetings. Your symptoms suggest a potential issue with the intake manifold. The jerking, reduced power, rough running, and exhaust smell could all stem from a vacuum leak. Has the vehicle undergone any recent maintenance or repairs that might have disturbed the manifold or its related components? Do you notice any hissing sounds near the engine bay, particularly when the engine is cold?

No recent maintenance, but a hissing sound... maybe? What exactly should I be listening for, and where should I focus my attention under the hood?

The hissing would be a high-pitched sound, indicative of air being sucked in where it shouldn't. Given your symptoms and the absence of recent work, a leaking intake manifold gasket due to scorching is highly probable. I must advise against attempting any repairs yourself without professional expertise. Continuing to drive with this condition may cause further damage. Please seek a qualified mechanic for a thorough inspection and diagnosis.

Thanks for the advice. Took it to the workshop; you were right. The intake manifold was defective due to scorching. Repair cost 1180€. All fixed now.
