Suzuki Wagon Random Light Switch Malfunction Fix

Having trouble with the lighting system in my 2001 Suzuki Wagon R. The dashboard lights and tail lights out of nowhere activate without using the light switch. The car has stored some error codes related to lighting. Pretty sure the automotive switch is failing, but wondering if anyone has dealt with similar symptoms? Specifically interested in repair solutions and workshop experiences. Did replacing the dimmer switch or main light switch resolve the issue? Any help in troubleshooting would be great as Id like to give my mechanic some direction.

Had nearly identical issues with a 2003 Suzuki Alto with similar electrical gremlins. The dashboard lights and exterior lighting would activate out of nowhere, very frustrating and potentially dangerous situation. After some basic troubleshooting, took it to a workshop where they diagnosed a faulty connection in the main headlight switch assembly. The wiring harness plug had corroded contacts, causing intermittent connections. Total repair cost was 95€, which included cleaning the connections and replacing a damaged plug connector. Common issue with these switches, the internal contacts wear down or get corroded over time, causing unusual activation of the lighting system. The dimmer switch was actually fine in my case, though it can show similar symptoms. To help diagnose your specific situation, could you share: Are there any specific conditions when the issue occurs (wet weather, bumpy roads)? Which error codes are stored? Does moving or wiggling the light switch affect the behavior? Does the headlight switch feel loose or make clicking sounds? This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with the faulty switch connection.

Thanks for sharing your experience. At 41222 KM on my car, this is the first major electrical issue Ive encountered. Last week I noticed the unusual activation happens mostly on rough roads, and wiggling the car lighting controls does seem to trigger the dashboard lights and other lighting systems. The light switch feels quite loose compared to when the car was newer, with some play in the mechanism. The main error code stored is related to the lighting circuit, suggesting an intermittent connection issue. Based on your description, it sounds very similar to my situation. Will have the switch assembly checked first before replacing other components. Thank you for the detailed troubleshooting suggestions.

Thanks for those additional details. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced with my Alto, especially the correlation with rough roads and loose switch feel. These automotive switches are definitely a weak point in these models. The unusual activation of tail lights and dashboard lights when driving on bumpy roads is a classic sign of worn switch contacts. In my case, the problem gradually worsened over time until the repair became essential. After fixing the switch assembly, the error codes cleared and the unusual lighting activations completely stopped. The new switch feels much more solid with positive tactile feedback when switching positions. One tip: while the main light switch was the primary issue, have your mechanic check the entire wiring harness connection at the switch. In my repair, they found the original harness clip was damaged, which contributed to the loose connection. Getting both addressed in one repair saved me from future issues. The relatively low mileage on your car suggests this is likely a wear issue rather than complete switch failure, which matches the typical failure pattern for these models.

Based on all this helpful feedback, I can now see my lighting system problems are likely caused by the worn headlight switch assembly. The similarities with your Alto case are striking, especially how the tail lights and dashboard lights act up on rough roads and when manipulating the car switch. My 41222 KM reading suggests this is just normal wear rather than a major electrical fault. The loose feel of the automotive switch combined with the error codes really points to the connection issues you described. Never would have guessed the wiring harness clip could be part of the problem. Will have my mechanic focus on the light switch assembly and check those harness connections you mentioned. Much better than replacing unusual parts hoping to fix it. The 95€ repair cost seems reasonable considering it fixes both the unusual activation issues and the error codes. Really appreciate the detailed explanation and troubleshooting steps. Gives me confidence going to the workshop with a clear idea of what needs checking. Hope the repair will be as straightforward as yours was.
