T-Roc Key Fob Failures: Quick Fix vs Mechanic Costs

Recently my key fob stopped working properly for unlocking/locking my 2019 T-Roc (gas, 143000km). Getting an error message and having issues with keyless entry. Thinking it might be a fob battery issue, but after my last mechanic visit left me skeptical, I want to check if others had similar problems. What was your experience and cost to fix this? Any advice on finding a trustworthy repair shop for electronic key issues appreciated.

Had the same symptoms on my 2016 VW Golf TSI. The key fob battery was showing low voltage warnings and keyless entry became unreliable. First noticed the car key would only work from very close range, then completely stopped responding. A basic fob battery replacement fixed the issue completely. The repair was straightforward, just needed a CR2032 battery swap. Not a serious repair at all, unlike transmission or engine problems. The symptoms match exactly what happens when auto key fobs run low on power, inconsistent operation followed by complete failure. Most parts stores can check the battery and help with replacement. Make sure the replacement battery is a quality brand since low quality batteries can cause similar issues to reappear quickly. Also worth getting the key fob tested after battery replacement to confirm no other electronic issues exist. If battery replacement doesnt solve it, then it might indicate a more complex problem with the key electronic module or car receiver unit, but this is much less common with these VW models.

Thanks for the detailed reply about the key fob issues. I also faced similar low voltage problems on my T-Roc and ended up needing a fob battery replacement. Pretty much had identical symptoms, intermittent locking and unusual error messages. Just curious, how much did you end up paying for the fix? And has everything been working properly since the battery replacement? Worth knowing if any other electronic issues popped up later.

Happy to report the electronic key has been working flawlessly since getting the battery replacement done. Paid 37€ for the complete fix, including a high-quality CR2032 battery and the labor to properly program it. The car key functions perfectly now, no more low battery warnings or keyless entry problems. Made sure to have the repair shop test all fob features after the battery swap to confirm everything was working correctly. For anyone else seeing similar symptoms with their auto key, its really important to address the fob battery warnings early. Waiting too long can sometimes cause the key to completely stop responding, which is much more inconvenient to deal with. The total repair cost was reasonable considering it solved all the issues. Much better than risking damage to the more expensive electronic components in the key by continuing to use a failing battery.

Following up on my key fob situation, I finally got it fixed last week. Went to a certified auto electronics specialist who diagnosed and confirmed the dead key battery right away. The whole repair took about 20 minutes and cost 45€ including a premium battery. The mechanic also showed me how the low voltage was affecting the key signal, which explained the unusual unlocking issues I was experiencing. Much better experience than my previous shop visits where they tried suggesting expensive electronic module replacements. Keyless entry works perfectly now, no more error messages or problems. Really glad it turned out to be just a simple battery replacement instead of a major electronic repair. Definitely learned to take key fob warnings more seriously and not wait until complete failure next time.
