Tacoma Hybrid Boost Pressure Issue

I'm having issues with my 2023 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid. It's got about 58255 km, and the check engine light keeps popping on. The engine feels like it's lost power, and the response is terrible. I'm hearing a weird whistling, almost hissing sound when I accelerate. Sometimes, it stalls when I'm idling, and my fuel consumption has gone through the roof! I suspect it might be a boost pressure actuator fault. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? It’s driving me crazy!

Sounds rough. I had a similar experience with my old 2018 Audi A4. Different car, but the symptoms you're describing ring a bell. Check engine light, power loss, and a weird hissing noise definitely point towards something in the turbo system. I was getting a P0299 code which also suggests a boost leak somewhere. Have you checked the hoses and connections around the turbo for any cracks or leaks? Also, might be worth looking at the turbo actuator valve and pressure sensor. If the bypass valve is defective, it could cause a massive problem with the turbocharger.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not the most mechanically inclined, so could you explain a bit more about the turbo actuator valve and how it's related to the boost pressure? Where exactly would I find it, and is it something I could potentially check myself, or am I better off taking it to a shop?

Yeah, no worries. The turbo actuator valve controls how much boost your turbo generates. It's basically an electrical bypass valve for the turbocharger. When it fails, it can't regulate the boost properly, which can cause issues like reduced power, weird noises, and even stalling. It's usually attached to the turbocharger itself. Honestly, if you're not super confident working on engines, it's probably best to take it to a reputable workshop. Messing with the turbo system without proper knowledge can lead to further damage. A mechanic should be able to diagnose it properly and replace the defective part. In my case, it was the boost pressure sensor that was faulty.

Thanks a bunch for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – turns out it was the boost pressure actuator valve. They replaced it, and the total repair cost was around 250€. The Tacoma is running like new again. Really appreciate your help!
