Talento Overheating Speed Sensor

I'm having a nightmare with my 2019 Fiat Talento diesel. The engine's been overheating like crazy, and the check engine light keeps popping on. I've checked the coolant levels, and they seem fine. I even took a peek at the radiator fan, and it doesn't seem to be spinning as it should. Could a dodgy speed sensor be causing the fan to malfunction and the car to overheat? I'm seriously pulling my hair out here!

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Fiat Talento diesel was experiencing engine overheating and a persistent check engine light. Despite normal coolant levels, the radiator fan was not functioning correctly. A potential cause identified was a faulty speed sensor, which could lead to fan malfunction and subsequent overheating. After replacing the defective speed sensor, the fan operated correctly, resolving the overheating issue.

Overheating and check engine light? Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Fiat Doblo. Has the fan blade been damaged? Any weird fan noise when you start the engine? Overheating can cause serious engine damage so be careful.

Thanks for the quick response! Now that you mention it, there's a slight whirring sound coming from the fan area, but I thought it was normal. As for the blade, it seems visually okay, no cracks or anything obvious. The overheating only happens after driving for a while. Any other thoughts?

The whirring noise is a red flag. It does sound like a defective speed sensor, which is responsible for controlling the radiator fan. In my case, this was the source. I was able to drive a little bit but had to monitor the engine temperature like a hawk. I would recommend taking it to a workshop and have them diagnose the car, it could save you from bigger repairs in the future.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – the speed sensor was defective. The mechanic replaced it, and the fan is now working perfectly. The final repair cost was 250€. Now I can finally drive without constantly watching the temperature gauge!
