Thank you for your reply! The coolant level is spot on. The fan only kicks in sporadically, and sounds like a wounded animal when it does. Do you think that this is something that I can fix myself, or should I take it to a workshop?

Given that the fan is intermittent and making strange noises, it's probably best to consult a professional. Replacing the sensor is one thing, but if the fan motor itself is failing, you might need specialized tools or expertise. I ended up visiting my local workshop. The whole episode set me back around 250€ including the sensor replacement. It's better to be safe than sorry when dealing with cooling systems. Overheating can cause serious engine damage, like a cracked head.

I feel your pain! I've got a Talisman too, and I had a similar overheating issue last year. Have you checked the coolant level? Mine was fine, but the fan was still acting up. In my case the speed sensor was not the culprit, but it may be in yours. Does the fan turn on at all, or is it completely dead?
