Taurus Crankshaft Sensor Issue

I'm having a weird issue with my 2009 Ford Taurus, gasoline engine. It's got about 45,684 km on it. The check engine light keeps popping on, and the car feels sluggish, like it's lost a good chunk of its power. Engine response is poor, and I swear the fuel consumption has gone up noticeably. I scanned the codes and it points to a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' issue. I'm suspecting a defective crankshaft sensor. Has anyone dealt with anything similar?

Whoa, sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same symptoms with my old BMW 3 Series. Check engine light, power loss, the whole shebang. It turned out to be the timing chain. Is it possible that the timing belt/chain skipped a tooth?

Interesting! A timing chain issue on a Taurus? I thought those were pretty robust. How many kilometers did your BMW have when that happened? And what codes were you getting?

Mine had around 120,000km on it when it happened. As far as codes, I can’t remember specifically. It's been a few years, but I distinctly remember the mechanic mentioning something about the crankshaft sensor and camshaft not being in sync. Get it checked out at a reliable shop.

Thanks for the info! Took it to the shop, and you were spot on – the crankshaft sensor was indeed defective, causing the timing to be off. Cost me about 340€ to get it replaced. Runs like new now!
